I really enjoyed making this collection. Feeling real, genuine, boy at christmas excitement when I passed a good one. So many U-turns were performed. Beeped by drivers so many times for crouching in the middle of the road, straining for the perfect shot. I want to thank Alex for sustained patience during the making of this collection, and for her help with deciding on the final cut.
Stops are in the order we stopped at them.

Railway switching control building in Basel. Designed by Hurzog De Meuron – architects of the Olympic stadium in Beijing.
It contorts to fit itself into a slender plot between some railway track and a road bridge. It looks perfectly faceless, as a piece of railroad infrastructure should – utilitarian and robust. It is almost windowless as what is sees is digital data.

When driving the car, I like to imagine that it is a train. The engine is the locomotive, the front 2 seats the driver’s cabin, the rear seats a single passenger carriage, and the boot a freight wagon. Accelerating slowly and maintaining a steady, consistent, chugging speed. I ask Alex to wait for me in the distance so I can drive up to her, and pretend she is a passenger at a platform. Manual doors.

I boarded a train. A train for cars. Remaining in the driver’s cabin, I could see the tracks through the windscreen and open sided carriages. The car adopted the repetitive, rhythmic feeling of a train. Acceleration was slow, cruising speed steady.

Scout rules:

1. A Scout’s honour is to be trusted.
2. A Scout is loyal.
3. A Scout’s duty is to be useful and to help others.
4. A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout.
5. A Scout is courteous.
6. A Scout is a friend to animals.
7. A Scout obeys orders of his parents, Patrol Leader or Scout Master WITHOUT QUESTION.
8. A Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties.

I really hated Cubs when I was a child. Having to interact with other horrible children in those Desborough terrapins.
Yet now I think of Scouts as fun and quaint; all ‘A’ frame tents, badges, walking sticks, toggles, bunk beds, rucksacks and wedgies.
We have come to stay in the Scout’s international centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland. Feeling a distinct pang of shame in answering ‘no’ when asked if i was Scout. It’s the same feeling i get with churches, I go to them but feel silly when I get there.

I have never before preferred a foreign currency more than Pound Sterling. I’m not referring to investment, stability or exchange, but to the physical appearance of the tender. The size, colour, orientation and cultural references of the Swiss bank notes makes me feel I am paying a higher price for goods than simply the note’s monetary value.

20 CHF. Features composer, Arthur Honegger. Famed for his work entitled, ‘Pacific 2-3-1′ about a steam locomotive. I just downloaded it, it’s great.
